Countdown to the Olympics
THE Rochdale School’s Olympic Competition is taking place throughout the year in the lead up to London 2012. This involves every subject, with students from every Rochdale school competing against each other.
The culmination will be a big athletics celebration event at Sports City in Manchester, which is one of the Olympic venues, on Thursday 5th July 2012. This will involve students competing against other Rochdale schools, while the winners of non-PE subjects will be there to receive their medals. Meanwhile, in November, students in Year 8 will take part in a week of activities relating to the Olympics. These will include learning about the Olympic values such as equality, inspiration, respect, excellence, friendship, courage and determination. They will revisit these values in the summer term as the countdown to the Olympics begins.

Primary schools go for gold
THROUGHOUT the Olympic year of 2011- 2012, we will be hosting tournaments in ten different sports for our local primary schools. Each tournament will be a stand- alone competition, but points can also be accumulated for a final Olympic champions trophy. Eight primary schools are involved,
and each has ‘adopted’ a country, which they will represent.
Congratulations to China, USA and Aruba (aka Meanwood, Healy and St Patrick’s) who won gold, silver and bronze, respectively, in the first event.
John Cook
Team players: St. Patrick’s RC Primary and Meanwood Community Primary.
Lewis bowls over the
competition
YEAR 8 cricketer Lewis Willman plays for both the Littleborough Under 13s and Under 15s, and also represents Rochdale District. The Under 13s recently won the Central
Lancashire League, and Lewis also picked up the Bowler of the Year Award as well as the Tommy Greenhough Memorial Award, LCC Under 15s Player of the Year. This was in recognition of his positive attitude towards his peers, his dedication to the sport and his willingness to train and work hard for continued improvement.
