As part of a series of acquisitions from Shell, UGI Corporation has purchased Derbyshire-based Shell Gas (LPG) UK, making American-owned UGI one of the largest LPG providers in the world. IMHX exhibitor Shell Gas (LPG) UK will be rebranded AvantiGas with immediate effect and will continue to be managed as a local company, focusing solely on LPG and providing what it says are high levels of customer service and safety to all its customers.
Donald Groth, vice president at UGI Corporation, explains: “There are no planned changes to price, service, employees or the management team as a result of the transaction, and we aim to continue business as usual, offering at the very least the same high level of service that Shell’s customers have been used to. In addition we are looking to drive the business forward with further improvements and have already invested in a new fleet of road tankers to enhance our readiness for the coming winter.” The only immediately obvious difference to existing Shell Gas (LPG) customers will be the new AvantiGas name and brand. AvantiGas will
continue to employ the highly skilled and dedicated workforce (many of whom are based in its Chesterfield head office), with a focus on maintaining its excellent health and safety reputation. The same contact points will be in place, along with the same level and quality of service. The name AvantiGas was chosen to represent a forward-moving and forward-thinking company. As part of this transaction, UGI also purchased Shell’s LPG businesses in seven other countries in Europe and the UK is now UGI’s second largest domestic
LPG business outside of the US. First and foremost, UGI says it prides itself on being a dedicated LPG supplier; over the past 12 months, UGI has acquired 12 LPG companies in Europe, demonstrating the company’s commitment to LPG and further enhancing its expertise. Each business across the globe is operated and managed locally under individual brand names, whilst sharing best practices to help improve service in each country.

Nexen to build trucks in UK
Forklift company Nexen has announced it is to move the production of its successful "X" range from Taiwan to its home base of Lowestoft, Suffolk in the UK. The announcement follows news that the company has also chosen to relocate its R&D department in the UK. Commenting on the decision, Nexen's UK managing director Tim Mason said: "We have an extensive programme of new models in the pipeline that are to be added to our existing range. And we can now oversee and control the time taken to get these trucks from the development stage into full production.
"This will also meet the concerns of
several major component suppliers being reluctant to release specialised development items to Taiwan, given the proximity of China. We have therefore taken the very big decision to move all of our Research and Development activities to our European Headquarters in the UK.
"We believe that this will allow us to expand our range at a dramatically faster rate than previously and at the same time, meet the constantly increasing demand being placed on our production schedule following our very positive launch into the North American market. These new models and others from the "X" range will also be
produced at our new production facility in the UK.”
As an independent company, Nexen has always enjoyed a close relationship with customers and prides itself on fast delivery times, enhancing quality and reliability and direct factory after-sales support.
The company has also being busy of late, building a comprehensive network of worldwide distributors under the guidance of Nexen director Pam Oakes, who observes: "This is a very exciting development, and personally I cannot wait to see the label on the "X" range trucks saying 'Made in the UK'. It is certainly true to say that UK manufacturing is still seen as being synonymous with quality, and the increasing labour costs in Asia coupled with the difficulties of recruiting a skilled workforce has been instrumental in our decision.
"Nexen also sees this as the opportunity to implement the latest technology in its manufacturing process, as opposed to working with inherent procedures, whilst gaining totally integrated production control.”
