US SPEEDSKATING LONG TRACK BASICS (cont.)
Men’s 10,000m START: This is the same place as the finish, located at the end of the start/finish straight. DISTANCE: 25 laps.
Team Pursuit
For international competition, the Team Pursuit event began as an exhibition during 2003 at World Cup events and became an Olympic event at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino. The Team Pursuit is raced similar to professional cycling, with team members starting and finishing together. Each country chooses three skaters to race against three skaters from other countries. Two countries race at a time, starting at opposite sides of the speedskating oval. The three skaters stay as close as possible, while alternating the lead position. The finish time is when the third person crosses the finish line. During the Team Pursuit, men race eight laps and ladies race six.
At World Cup events, each country skates one Team Pursuit and the best time wins. At the Olympic Games, the countries go through rounds. The team that wins its pair moves on to the next round until they move into the “Gold medal round” or the “Bronze medal round.” Only in those rounds are medals awarded.
SCORING
Samalog scoring is used during long track speedskating events to determine overall champions. Times are measured in seconds and then converted to points using the average time of a 500m. Points from all races during an event are added together to create an overall classification. The lower the point totals the better. Points are computed using the following formula:
500m time=points
1000m time divided by 2=points 1500m time divided by 3=points 3000m time divided by 6=points 5000m time divided by 10=points 10,000m time divided by 20=points
For a ladies allround competition, points from the 500m, 1500m, 3000m and 5000m are totaled. (For Junior Ladies, 500m, 1000m, 1500m and 3000m.) An allround men’s competition consists of 500m, 1500m, 5000m and 10,000m. (For Junior Men, 500m, 1500m, 3000m and 5000m.) Ladies’ and men’s sprint events are 2x500m and 2x1000m.
