the syringe directly on the syringe body with the fingers and thumb, as one would grip a phlebotomy needle. This stress-free and close-up grip results in better control of the positioning and a more natural manipulation of the needle in tissue. A significant benefit is that it allows the
majority of fillers to be injected using a 30 gauge needle. Filler materials that typically require 27 gauge needles when manually injected can be injected through 30 gauge, or even finer gauge needles. Injectors have reported that more uniform flow rates, better placement control, and the use of finer needles appear to result in less pain and bruising for the patient. With the machine, the injector simply
adjusts pressure as indicated on an LEd display to yield a desired flow rate and proceeds with the filler injection. At any time, the flow rate can be increased or decreased to suit. The human thumb can have difficulty maintaining uniformity of force over even a few seconds. Repeatability of plunger force from one injection to the next is almost impossible using the thumb. This normal human limitation leads to non-uniform injection flow rates, bolus injections, and thumb fatigue over multiple uses, especially with higher viscosity fillers. The system eliminates these issues in the injection of any dermal filler, giving both the injector and the patient an improved experience. Patients generally require more than 1 ml
of filler for optimal correction. Using a sterile transfer technique, the system is easily adapted to 2–4 ml syringes, providing the same uniform and controllable flow rates as using a 1 ml syringe. Even the strongest of thumbs has difficulty injecting 2 ml or larger syringes since the bore size of the larger syringe is increased in area. This increased area requires a greater thumb force to achieve the same syringe pressures and flow rates as a 1 ml standard syringe.
The author’s experience The author was somewhat sceptical when he heard of the Artiste system, but decided to evaluate it. My initial thoughts were that I could not see a real need for this device in practice, and it seemed to be an unnecessary added cost. However, when the device was demonstrated, I kept an open mind and was unexpectedly impressed. On delivery of the system, it was easy to assemble and use with simple instructions in a variety of applications. My staff was able to manage it without any
