now 20 years old, the basic proposal and its principles remain the same today. 'The basic idea is to have a light

source — a flash lamp and filters — which optimises the wavelength and enable you to control the pulse duration.' Perhaps one of the

greatest advantages of IPL technology is its simplicity and that it can be used in relatively low‑cost systems, which makes it ideal for both clinic and home use. 'Around 4 or 5 years

ago, Syneron began making use of the technology that was developed for professional use and applying it to use in the home, which I believe is the next big wave in aesthetic treatments. 'When you have this technology at

home — although it is limited to more modest energy levels — the fact that it is accessible and readily available enables you to do things you could only previously do at a professional clinic.' Syneron's products are powered by a

technology called elōs, which harnesses the energy of light together with bipolar radio frequency (RF), creating a much safer technology that is able to treat all skin types, which you cannot do with IPL alone. Furthermore, using both energies together can overcome some of the basic limitations of light energy alone.

Becoming Syneron Dr Eckhouse had originally founded ESc medical in 1992, together with the patent application. however, he left in 1999 and went on to found Syneron in 2001. Essentially, Syneron was founded around an upgrade of the technology, which added bipolar RF. 'People have used RF energy, which

actually drives electrical currents through the tissue, for years,' explains Dr Eckhouse. 'But what was new was combining light energy together with RF to create a synergistic effect — hence the name 'Syneron'!' The light is used to heat targets, which

become targets for the RF energy, and it is this synergy which enables you to do things that you cannot do with either light or RF alone.

devices are safe, then you are taking a very big risk.

newer technologies, some of which aren't necessarily based on the use of energy, such as those for skin whitening and teeth whitening. 'It is very exciting because there is so much happening that we are involved in — it's great to get up every morning and think about the many other things that we could do.' of course, trialling

and testing new technologies is a significant part of any technological or p harma c eu ti c al company. 'There were a lot of

risks [when first developing the IPL technology], because the whole idea of IPL was to put a flash lamp very close to the surface of the skin and to use it at a very high temperature,' explains Dr Eckhouse. And of course, when used at a high

energy frequency, the flash lamps can sometimes explode, so Dr Eckhouse initiated a lot of work to ensure that the right safety mechanisms were in place. however, he is still concerned by the speed with which some move in the aesthetic industry. 'Doing things quickly is ok, but if you

don't do it in a serious manner and you don't invest in clinical trials and make sure your devices are safe, then you are taking a very big risk,' he says. 'my main advice is that aesthetic

treatments are like any other kind of medical treatment, so if you want to be in it, you need to make the investment in clinical work, make sure your devices are safe and that people understand how to use them. You need to invest if you want to get it right, and you need to be patient.

Entrepreneurial passion Behind Dr Eckhouse's cool exterior, is a man who has obviously worked hard and continually strived for the best throughout his career. he definitely isn't afraid of competition. 'We are in a very competitive market — if

the market is not competitive, it means that it is not interesting. 'We are quite unique in our business

around the world, and as the largest company in our market, we sell well over $200 million every year in the professional business alone.' Indeed, it is this commercial business

know‑how and financial strength that Dr Eckhouse and Syneron aim to bring to everything they do. 'To be an entrepreneur, you have to

wake up every morning and not only think of all the great things that you can do, but really be aware of the potential threats, and know that not everything is always rosy and that the sun doesn't always shine, but when you wake up and it does shine, then it's good enough.'
