Flow Sensors Offer Very High Resolution and Accuracy Over a Complete Measuring Range
Sensortechnics (Germany) develops highly sensitive thermal mass flow sensors for air and gases with measuring ranges up to 500l/min. Sensortechnics offers custom solutions with two sensing elements featuring excellent resolution and accuracy over the complete measuring range. One sensor chip is located in the middle of the main stream for the measurement of very small flows around the zero flow point. A second chip is arranged in a bypass configuration and measures higher flows up to full scale. The flow sensors utilise a microcontroller for digital signal processing and can continuously switch between the two sensing elements. Sensortechnics’ mass flow sensors achieve very fast response times below 10ms and offer a linear analog output signal and a digital I²C or SPI bus interface at the same time.
An important performance characteristic of high quality medical ventilators is the early detection of the patient’s inhaling phase. This ensures that spontaneous breathing can immediately be supported with a defined overpressure and the patient’s work of breathing is kept as low as possible. Additionally, a high resolution and accuracy over the complete flow range is essential for many applications. Both requirements can be perfectly met using Sensortechnics’ flow sensors with two sensing elements.
Sensortechnics’ offers fast and flexible adaptions of its flow sensors according to custom specific requirements. This allows OEM device manufacturers to shorten their design cycle, save development costs and achieve competitive advantages as well as fast innovations to the market.
Important features of Sensortechnics’ flow sensors include; flow ranges up to 500l/min air or gas, very high resolution due to two sensing elements, a microcontroller based digital signal processing and an analogue output signal and digital I²C or SPI bus interface.

Collaboration for Software Support on New High Resolution TOFMS Systems
Advanced Chemistry Development Inc. (ACD/Labs) has introduced Spectrus software compatible with LECO’s (USA) new High Resolution TOFMS (HRT) instrumentation.
“With this announcement, ACD/Labs extends its industry- leading competence in analytical data management software to the forefront of technological innovation,” said Graham A. McGibbon, Ph.D., Product Manager at ACD/Labs.
LECO’s (HRT) instrumentation provides acquisition speeds of up to 200 spectra/second, mass resolution up to 100,000 FWHM, and mass accuracy less than 1 ppm. Available in LC and GC configurations, the HRT systems feature LECO’s exclusive ChromaTOF-HRT™ software for seamless data handling. Earlier this year, the HRT technology was recognised with the prestigious 2011 Pittcon Editors’ Gold Award.
“While some systems on the market offer their users a choice between acquisition speed, mass accuracy or resolution, LECO’s HRT systems offer all three with no compromise,” said Jeffrey S. Patrick, Ph.D., of LECO’s Life Science and Chemical Analysis Centre. “This supplemental processing software from ACD/Labs will help LECO to continue to provide innovative solutions for industries such as life sciences, environment, energy, and fuels. ACD/Spectrus Processor™ and other ACD/Labs’ expert MS software tools enhance what users can glean from high resolution data such as that from the HRTs."

Airbourne Tritium Sampler Introduced
SDEC (France) is proud to introduce the H3R 7000, an innovative instrument for sampling airborne Tritium. It allows the user to collect a sample of (tritiated) water vapour sufficient to perform an activity measurement in less than 40 minutes.
The liquid sample obtained allows you to perform liquid scintillation measurements with a detection limit of 0.01 Bq/m3
. The operating principle is based on an international patent
from the French institute of radioprotection (I.R.S.N) and the French Navy military school of atomic energy (E.A.M.E.A).
The H3R 7000 performs fast trapping of Tritium in vapour form, which allows several samples to be taken each day and with a trapping efficiency HTO of 100%. The samples are not diluted and the H3R 7000 has a detection limit of 0.01 Bq/m3
This unit includes a ‘quick start mode’ and carries out automatic calculation of the sampling time based on actual absolute air humidity (RH/T measurement). Additionally; the H3R 7000 performs automatic drying between samples, which avoids cross- contamination (<0.1%). An integral USB output and printer is also included to allow for easy reporting and labelling.

Improving Accelerated Solvent Extraction Workflow ) concentration and preparation of samples.
Genevac (UK) has launched the Flip-Flop™ system to improve post Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE®
Using the special double-ended Flip-Flop™ tube - samples can be collected directly from a Dionex ASE®
The Genevac Rocket Evaporator enables rapid concentration or evaporation of up to 18 Dionex ASE®
system. A SampleGenie™ adaptor with GC vial is then fitted. The tube is flipped over and placed into the Puck sample holder in a Genevac Rocket Evaporator and the cap removed. The samples are then concentrated directly into a GC autosampler vial.
vials simultaneously. In addition using Genevac’s proprietary SampleGenie™ technology in conjunction with the Rocket Evaporator enables samples to be concentrated directly into an autosampler or storage vial, eliminating the need for manual sample transfer. Addition of the new Genevac Flip-Flop™ system completes the automation of transfers from ASE®
vials. Using this simple procedure eliminates manual transfer steps and helps automate the ASE® evaporation / concentration process resulting in improved laboratory workflow, increased reproducibility of results and enhanced sample recovery. Reader Reply Card No. 103
