Apple’s rule changes will result in more money for digital magazine publishers

In a brief but important decision, Apple has amended its rules meaning publishers are no longer obliged to sell subscriptions through Apple’s in-app purchase system. Under the previous guidelines, publishers had to sell subscriptions through the app store if they wanted to see through external websites; a feature which saw Apple themselves claim 30% of subscription bought from inside the app. Under the new terms however, publishers can opt to sell solely through an external site and therefore retain 100% of the revenue.

In addition, as part of the change Apple no longer requires that magazines or subscriptions sold through the app store to be of equal or lesser value to any external price. The full rule change can be read below.

11.14 Apps can read or play approved content (specifically magazines, newspapers, books, audio, music, and video) that is subscribed to or purchased outside of the app, as long as there is no button or external link in the app to purchase the approved content. Apple will not receive any portion of the revenues for approved content that is subscribed to or purchased outside of the app.
