AIR FRANCE has operated what it claims is the lowest ever carbon emitting flight as part of the airline's comprehensive project to reduce emissions. Flight AF6129 flew from


Toulouse to Paris Orly in October using a 50 per cent mix of sustainable biofuel comprised of both conventional kerosene and biokerosene made from hydroge- nated used vegetable oils. The result was emissions of 54g of


CO2 per passenger kilometre, half that of a normal flight. The experimental flight also featured new seating – which has been installed across its short- haul aircraft – that weighs 40 per cent less than conventional seating. In addition, the carrier is also reducing the weight of catering equipment by 15 per cent. Every kilogramme of weight removed represents a saving of 80 metric tonnes of CO2 per year.

MEASURES The airline has also worked


to optimise procedures both inflight – such as more efficient trajectories and flight paths – and on the ground by, for example, taxiing to and from runways under the power of only one engine. As a result, the airline has reduced its carbon emissions on A380-operated flights between


Paris and New York by between three to five tonnes. The carrier says, "Air France’s determination to conduct its business operations in a sustainable, responsible manner is central to its corporate plan, which emphasises its societal responsibility and commitment to stakeholders."


HOTELZON is attempting to get to grips with the tricky area of hotel-related carbon emissions with the launch of eCO-Impact. The hotel booking agency has launched the tool in partnership with Ecompter, a specialist in carbon footprint measurement for the hospitality industry. Users can see the estimated environmental impact of their stay in a pop-up window during the booking process. Measurements are based on parameters such as the duration of stay, room type, number of guests and pre- loaded hotel data. Participating hotels can also provide full carbon footprint reports for their clients. The system is currently being rolled out.
