EDITOR’S CHOICE AWARDS ORIGINALITY & EXCELLENCE

Claire Adler, acclaimed jewellery and luxury journalist attends the show to meet with those exhibitors she has chosen to recognise this year.

“We have a great set of winners this year who have crafted fantastic contemporary jewels – a delight for the eyes. Irrespective of the materials these gifted designers have used – be it brilliant diamonds, gold, wood, Swarovski crystals or even oil for that matter – each has come up with head- turning and memorable jewellery. There’s the sleek and stunning Andrew Geoghegan Satellite Fire Opal Cocktail Ring (his best seller of the show), and the ultra quirky

Abigail Stradling Time Ring incorporating sand, wood and oil – how’s that for innovative materials? Dower and Hall’s beautiful Phosphorescence Cuff proves romance is definitely alive and kicking, having been inspired by memories of the designer duo’s honeymoon. More offbeat pieces included Gina Melosi’s cuff, which hints at the danger of sharp broken glass while drawing attention to the beauty of shaping metals for adornment.”

NOMADES WINS...

Susanne Asbeck (pictured above in the middle) of Nomades won the Prestigious Gem-Empathy Award at IJL 2011, awarded annually by the Gem-A to the exhibitor who displays jewellery presenting interesting gemstones in innovative designs, sold with enthusiasm and gem knowledge. Nomades, based in Germany, not only presented outstanding jewellery, but impressed the judges with full disclosure of each stone’s source, if known. Jack Ogden, CEO of Gem-A, said: “At the very heart of each of Nomades’s designs is the gemstone. The unique designs display an enthusiasm for gemstones, and, coupled with full disclosure and an honest approach to gemstone sourcing, Nomades was the favourite amongst the judges.”

F. HINDS HIGH STREET BY DESIGN

F. Hinds were delighted to announce the two winners of the first High Street By Design jewellery competition. Sian Hughes from Worcester won the Newly Established Designer Category with her Folded Heart Collection (pictured above) and Rosie Velk from Letchworth won the Student Designer Category with her Fan Collection (pictured left).

The idea behind the competition is to assist two jewellery designers through the process from original concept, creating a design to be manufactured in volume to the promotion and launch of their finished jewellery pieces sold in F. Hinds’ 110 stores and website. Judges Andrew Hinds from F. Hinds, and manufacturer Bob Morrish from R. E. Morrish also held a seminar at the show with the winners documenting the entire experience so that others may learn.
