OTS: Review

OTS: The success continues

B

efore the doors were even opened to trade visitors in September, the 2011 Outdoor Trade Show at Stoneleigh Park was the largest in its history. With over 135 exhibitors, the show was host to the latest products and innovations across the outdoor industry.

As with previous years, the 2011 show was a great success and a total of 1265 visitors attended OTS during the course of the three-day event. Despite attendance being slightly down on last year’s show, the organisers received excellent feedback from exhibitors and visitors alike. Many events were held by exhibitors at their stands, including Timberland’s Happy Hour, but the Outdoor Trade Social attracted undoubtedly the biggest crowd.

When the opening day drew to a close, around 300 exhibitors and visitors gathered for the social, keen to see which of the finalists in each Novel Awards category had been favoured by the judges.

The Novel Awards proved even more popular this year attracting over 100 entries from brands seeking that important trade recognition. Each product entered was assessed by a panel of expert judges, comprising outdoor retailers and journalists, with assistance from special guest judge, mountaineer Bonita Norris. Prior to announcing the winner of each category and presenting them with their award, Bonita made an encouraging speech about the

crucial role manufacturers play in helping both her and all other adventurers achieve their dreams through the continued development of new products and innovations.

The 2011 winners for each category were announced as:

● Accessories: Whitby & Co – ‘Geigerrig 2 Litre Hydration Engine’

● Backpacks: Vaude – ‘Wallaby’ ● Clothing: KoziKidz – ‘Soft Shell Jacket and Trousers’

● Camping Equipment: Lyon - ‘Jetboil Crunchit’

● Footwear: Tecnica – ‘Diablo Max’ ● Sleeping Bags: Snugpak – ‘Chrysalis’

The judges were particularly impressed with Whitby & Co’s ‘Geigerrig 2 Litre Hydration Engine’ and this was awarded the coveted Product of the Year accolade.

Reflecting on OTS 2011, show organiser Marta Williams said: “OTS 2011 was a great success,

with many visitors commenting on the quality and diversity of exhibitors at the show. Since it was launched in 2006, OTS has proven to be a popular choice with manufacturers and retailers alike, and this not only continues to affirm the need for such a show, but also supports the autumn timing.
