Lifesystems Trek First Aid Kit They say:

“Treatment for cuts, grazes, blisters and other minor injuries is important in preventing

infection and this pack provides the basic first aid items.”

GWA highlight: “The finished pack is admirably small,

about the same size as a bag of crisps, and weighs in at under 250g which makes it justifiable on all but the most extreme of lightweight treks. If you’ve ventured into any outdoor store in the last three years you’ll know Lifesystems from their impressive displays of everything a traveller or outdoorsy person needs to survive without a handy medical centre.” Summary: “It’s a small first aid kit which contains the essential bits to get you home when you suffer minor injuries. The guide included in the kit goes beyond it to help with more serious diagnoses so it’s ideal for DofE and, in fact, pretty much every backpack. The case is as tough as old boots and your kit will stay clean and hygienic after years of travel.”

Mountain House Dehydrated Meals

Edelrid Hexon Multifuel Stove

They say: “At only 220 g, the Edelrid Hexon Multifuel is one of the lightest stoves in its class. This stove is distinguished by its compactness and versatility (it works with gas, gasoline and kerosene). Further advantages are the foldable feet and pot stand which give the Hexon Multifuel a stable base on the ground and for the pot as well.” GWA highlight: “We stuck a pan full of eggs on the stove and they cooked merrily, if somewhat quickly. We found that it wasn’t the easiest thing to turn down the stove’s heat. Sure, there’s a valve, but it’s either hot or hot, such is the output of the stove (quoted at 3,000w).” Summary: “It’s built well and packs down nice and small for backpacking, and the ability to use a variety of fuels is great for expeditions or travelling. It’s easy to use (once you’re familiar with it) and priced keenly with its competitors. I can’t find any reason to fault it.”

They say: “Mountain House is the leading brand of freeze dried food in the US and has been the main choice of backpackers, hikers, campers and other outdoor enthusiasts for over 40 years. The team here at European Freeze Dry, England have developed a range of Mountain House meals specifically for the European market.”

GWA highlight: “The Mediterranean vegetable pasta is superb. You’d never know it was from a packet. The scrambled egg, ham and crunchy potato was very tasty, but a tad watery and some potato bits were rock hard. The custard with apple was lovely, and took me right back to sweet school dinners. The other flavours we tried out were OK, but not quite as nice as we’d hoped they’d be.” Summary: “If you see the need to carry dehydrated food instead of wet food, then take a look at these. The veggie pasta and apple custard combo would be a tasty full meal after a day’s hiking. I wasn’t too fussed with the meaty meals, with the exception of the ham breakfast, but the veggie stuff is ace. £4.99 for a pouch is on the expensive side for a meal, but they keep forever so could form the basis for an emergency meal.”

They say: “Barely noticeable in your pack, it delivers impressively in camp. Precision flame control goes from torch to simmer while our Wind Clip wind shield boosts efficiency in breezy conditions. The PocketRocket stove’s diminutive size is also the foundation of a solid emergency kit for home or trail.” GWA highlight: “After our first day cycling down the d650 from Cherbourg one of us was shattered and moody and as we didn’t think far enough ahead to bring the pan we bought a big tin of Ratatouille instead. The Rocket lit reassuringly with a whoosh and cooked as expected – taking about five

minutes to warm through the mush. It provided a powerful jet – burning off the tin’s white plastic lining and adding delicious faux melted parmesan to our food.” Summary: “It’s great for small pans and emergency cooking and packs down nice and small. It only weighs 85g and the build quality is good. With a built-in wind shield and easy-to-use controls, it’s good in any weather.”
