WATERPARKS Waterparks
Lo-Q makes a splash into waterparks WITH the successful 2011 trial wrapping up for the season at Six Flags White Water in Marietta, Georgia, US, Lo-Q has ‘made a splash’ with the world’s first virtual queuing system for waterparks. The UK-based, AIM-listed company’s Q-band
product is purportedly the first of its kind for waterparks. Guests wear a lightweight, waterproof RFID wristband that is simple to use and allows them to make ride reservations for their favourite slides. Using kiosks located at various locations, guests use the simple touchscreens to choose their next
ride and then scan their wristband. The Q-band shows the time they have to wait and counts down until they can ride, eliminating the need to physically stand in line. When the countdown gets to zero, guests enter via a specially marked entrance and have their wristband validated at the entry point. The Q-band system can also be used to manage tube rentals, locker access and cashless payments.
OpenAire waterpark now under construction
CONSTRUCTION of the world’s largest aluminium-domed indoor waterpark is now underway in Donetsk, Ukraine, paving the way for an exciting new entertainment venue. The 61,000sq.ft Aquatoria waterpark is being built by
Canadian company, OpenAire. Scheduled to open in early 2012, the waterpark is already being hailed as a game- changer for the Donetsk region, which is one of four cities co-hosting the UEFA Euro 2012 football championship. “This structure truly is the first of its kind anywhere in
the world,” said Mark Albertine, president of OpenAire. The free-standing Aquatoria dome will be 26m high,
®
with a diameter of 85m. It will feature a unique retractable design that slides open in a smooth rotating motion, opening up to 50 per cent of the structure to sunlight and fresh air. Albertine added: “Our design and engineering team really understood the kind of majestic, awe-inspiring presence the city of Donetsk was looking for and achieved this ambitious vision with a completely unique, breathtaking design that promises to become an area landmark.”
