‘‘ > TIDE TURNER
BRISTOL-BASED Marine Current Turbines (MCT) is a globally renowned company in marine current and tidal stream energy. MCT installed the world’s fi rst offshore tidal turbine off the Devon coast in 2003 and completed installation and commissioning of the world’s fi rst commercial scale tidal turbine, the SeaGen, in Northern Ireland in 2008. Many features of SeaGen’s design have been extensively patented internationally. CEO Andrew Tyler says: “SeaGen has attracted much international interest; from industry and potential partners, overseas governments and the world’s media. “Although the main focus of MCT’s work is within British and Northern Irish waters, we have plans to install a 1.5MW fully submerged SeaGen turbine in Nova Scotia, Canada, in partnership with local fi rm Minas Power.
“MCT sees opportunities across the world for its tidal technologies, notably North and South America, particularly
Chile; the Far East, in markets like Korea and Japan; and Australasia.” He adds: “MCT draws upon the expertise of various fi rms based in the South West to assist in the development and deployment of our projects.”
