UK HOSPITAL PAID TO SAVE ENERGY
Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, a large UK hospital with more than 5,000 staff , is one of a growing number of organizations realizing the benefi ts of using demand-response technology to tackle energy consumption. Last year, the hospital installed an application called DemandSMART, developed by the US fi rm EnerNOC, which turned its existing onsite backup generators into a new opportunity to earn money. By using its generators to provide short-term electricity generation during periods of peak demand, the hospital cuts its energy use by more than 600 kilowatts a year and earns around £15,000 in the process via the National Grid’s STOR (short-term operating reserves) program, an incentive off ered by the grid operator to reduce the need to fi re up ‘peaking’ power plants. The facilities team receives
notifi cation from EnerNOC via email or mobile phone a peak-demand period is coming. They have 18 minutes to respond by activating the backup generation via the hospital’s building management system. Then it’s time to sit back and enjoy seeing their energy bills fall and the cash pile up.
