consumer cloud, and to deliver network-enabled consumer services that today’s hosted cloud offerings cannot replicate.


Delivering the Consumer Cloud


What must service providers do to support all these value-added cloud services? To realize their full potential, consumer cloud service offerings must overcome a number of technical and business challenges. On the technical side, the essential capabilities required by the consumer cloud encompass four overarching functions: authorization and entitlement, efficient high-quality delivery, device and endpoint management, and scalability.


• How does the system know a consumer is authorised to view this content, in this geographic location, on this client device that is not managed by the service provider? • How does the system assure a high QoE over unmanaged networks, or when moving from one type of screen to another? And how does the system connect the user to the right content source in the most efficient manner possible? • How does the system preserve QoE when content is viewed on a smartphone, tablet, or other consumer device not managed by the service provider? • How does the service scale to support billions of connected IP endpoints, in the home and on the go?


The basis for answering these


questions is the intelligent network. It is the unique capabilities of the service provider network - capabilities that conventional cloud offerings cannot provide - that ultimately allow service providers to deliver on the true promise of the consumer cloud. The intelligent network optimises


the delivery of content and services to mobile devices on the go, as well as powering residential gateways to transparently and efficiently extend cloud services into the wired home (Figure 1). To deliver on this vision, the
