What’s New In July Serena Hotels unveiled the newest addition to its portfolio: the Lake Elmentetia luxury camp. Located in the Soysambu Conservancy, East Africa’s only breeding ground for the White Pelican, the lodge has 24 luxury tents and beyond birdwatching offers day and night game drives, walking and balloon safaris. Lake Elmentetia is located 28 kilometres from Nakuru town and just one kilometre from the nearest private airstrip. Hosting just six guests at any one time,


Naibor Wilderness is a new private camp that shares the same scenic location as its larger sister-camps,– Naibor and Little Naibor. Guests have access to facilities at all three camps, including a library, a bush spa, and a sunrise balloon safari. Similarly, Luxury canvas tents feature en-suite bathrooms, African decor, and king-size beds. Nairobi’s Karura Forest, once considered unsafe, opened to tourists in February. Nairobi Tented Camp is the first accommodation in Nairobi National Park. There are eight luxury tents and with 24

Rhino River Camp is a new eco- boutique safari lodge located in Meru National Park, where the legend of Elsa, the Born Free lioness began. It comprises of five tented suites built out of caramel canvas and raised on stilts above the Kindani River. Treetops Lodge will close from October 1 until January 2012 for refurbishment. thesafaricollection.com. Kicheche Naboisho Camp is the smallest luxury camp in the Masai Mara’s newest conservation area, the Naboisho Conservancy. The six tents come with raised decks and an elevated stone lapa. The conservancy offers a window on one of nature’s great treats, the annual migration, but also private game viewing year round. Looking out onto open plains, forest, permanent water and rugged low hills, the habitat attracts many species. Naboisho Camp is unfenced and wildlife is free to move down the valley at will. Kenya’s latest UNESCO World Heritage Site. In East Africa’s oldest harbour, the fort was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Elephant Pepper Camp, located in


the Masai Mara, has been awarded the highest form of Eco-Rating certification by Ecotourism Kenya, for ‘demonstrating outstanding levels of socio-economic investment, responsible resource use and environmental conservation’. There are only two other Gold-rated facilities in Kenya. Elephant Pepper Camp is situated in the middle of the protected Mara North Conservancy wilderness area. The camp, small and exclusive, is made up of spacious canvas tents featuring en-suite bathrooms with eco-friendly flush toilets and traditional safari showers.
