FEATURE SINGAPORE/MALAYSIA

tastes and budgets. Huge investment

in theme parks, hotels and attractions in Sentosa Island makes it an ideal choice for families. The same is true for the big choice of attractions elsewhere. "Marina Bay is another area receiving

big investment and you can stay or wine and dine at some of the finest hotels and restaurants in the region.”

DAVID CARLAW product manager Far East, Premier Holidays “After a big increase last

year, our business to Malaysia has dipped slightly in the face of the oversupply of resorts and competitive prices in Thailand. That said, we expect it to bounce back strongly for us after the campaign we are running with the very pro-active Malaysia Tourism Board. “The bulk of bookings is to luxury

resorts in places like Langkawi; I think Malaysia would perform even better if it had more three- and four-star options.

"Singapore has been going great guns,

in conjunction with our Australia/New Zealand offerings, although price is a factor. I’m pleased that hoteliers restricted their increases to about 10%. Our best-performing property is the Park at Clarke Quay – it’s within a gentle stroll of many attractions.”

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL BY JONATHAN HART “Curiosity may have killed the cat but there’s one mystery remaining for me about Singapore and Malaysia. As a frequent visitor over many years

and a huge fan of both destinations, I’ve always found the people charming and ready to answer my occasionally inane questions with patient good humour. Yet idiotic or not, I’ve yet to be given a

rational explanation as to why the majority of hotels and malls run their air- conditioning at full blast.! I don't deny that AC is pretty essential

in the tropics but why permanently ratchet it up to cold-store levels? Stepping into the equivalent of the

Arctic from the fierce heat and body- drenching humidity outside can be akin to becoming a candidate for instant pneumonia or a session in cryotherapy (that’s sub-zero body treatment to you and me). So first timers please take note: that ubiquitously recommended 'light sweater for the evenings'? You might want to think about a parka instead!"
