FEATURE SOUTH PACIFIC
open next year on the French Polynesian island of Tetiaroa. Previously owned by Marlon Brando, it will feature 47 deluxe villas with private pool.
Tourism Talk JANE WEST
UK/Ireland representative Fiji Visitors Bureau "Visitors from the
European Economic Community rose by nearly 7% in the first four months of 2011, with April alone showing a massive 23.7% increase over last year. "We are pushing Fiji's growing
reputation in the surfing and cruise markets. More major cruise lines are including Fiji in their southern hemisphere itineraries whilst small ship cruise companies such as Blue Lagoon and Captain Cook have more ambitious cruises around the Fiji islands, including the previously unexplored Lau islands. “Our Fiji Bula Bus road show this month (September), with training, dinner and traditional dancing from Fijian warriors, visits Brighton, Bristol, Winchester, Bath and Bournemouth from September 12-15.”
ALISON CRYER Samoa’s director of tourism, UK and Ireland “Samoa’s visitor figures
increased by 9.5% in the year ending April 2010. Samoa is a real off-the-beaten track experience, a great all-year-round destination and ideal as an affordable add- on to Australia or New Zealand.” On September 21 we are holding an exclusive training event, combined with a performance of South Pacific live at the Barbican. To register, email samoa@
representationplus.co.uk with the
subject “I want to experience the real South Pacific.” “Agents will also find the Travel Uni Sell
Samoa training programme really useful in selling more of the destination.”
JANE DAWKINS UK director,
Tahiti Tourisme “UK arrival figures have
taken a 50% tumble since pre-financial crisis times. Reduced airlift after ANZ dropped its flight in 2008 played its part but with the appointment this year of a UK representative we are implementing a diverse marketing and PR strategy. “The change in the wedding law on the islands – now possible after spending just three days here – will boost the romance market, which is our main sector. The 2011 marketing campaign will be based around 'Win Your Dream Island Wedding in Tahiti' and on diving, cruising and yachting audiences.”
CARMEL BEATTIE Cook Islands Tourism chief executive officer “The Cook Islands is not just a beach
holiday destination but a vibrant and culturally rich set of islands in the South Pacific, that caters for a wide range of tourism needs. We are very excited to be working closely with the UK travel trade to promote this. "Upcoming new activities include the launch of our Kia Orana online training programme later this year, a Europe-wide Cook Islands road show and numerous marketing activities aimed at raising the awareness of the incredible product through the UK trade.”
From The Front Line JIM MILLWARD
product manager Audley Travel “We’ve seen a couple of
trends – the Pacific is an increasingly popular honeymoon destination and there’s more interest in multi-island itineraries to see different landscapes and cultures as well as contrasting resorts.”
KATIE LOW personal travel advisor Kuoni, Cambridge “The South Pacific is a
SOUTH PACIFIC Top Selling Tips...
• Sleep Under The Stars: “In Samoa, sleep in a traditional 'fale' under the stars. The luxury version is perfect for honeymooners and budget travellers are catered for in village fales for around £20” ALISON CRYER, Samoa PR Representation Plus
• Island Hop: “French Polynesia is the easiest place to island hop as the islands are much closer than elsewhere. Take a ferry to Moorea or a short flight to Bora Bora from Tahiti.” ANNA SELBY, Travel writer
• Friday Night Fever: In the Cook islands Friday night is Island Night! Expect plenty of high-octane dancing and drumming from the locals – and get ready to join in!” ANNA SELBY, Travel writer
