THE PULSE
NEW CHURCHES
CONNEXION MONTREAL MONTREAL, QUEBEC
Pastor Francois Verschelden
WHO THEY ARE Started in November 2010, Connexion Montreal is a French Quebecois church start reaching the French-speaking population of Montreal, the least reached people group in North America. Heavily secular and skeptical toward organized religion, the Quebecois require indigenous French-speaking leaders to reach them with the gospel.
WHAT ARE THEY DOING? Connexion Montreal is developing a church intentional about making disciples and involving those disciples in biblical community through Sunday worship and cell group meetings in the city’s boroughs. Connexion engages its members through biblical training and hands-on ministry.
WHERE DO THEY MEET? “It took us two years to find a place to meet because of the restrictions placed on us by the city, and our place is small.” Still in its infancy, Connexion, by necessity, is a church all over the city. While it meets on Sundays in the borough of Ahuntsic, the goal is to work through cell groups that would begin new churches. “By 2020 we want to plant 10 churches in the city and hundreds of cell groups,” Verschelden says.

TOP PICKS
The Millenials (BHBooks, 2011) by Thom S. Rainer and Jess W. Rainer describes the characteristics and potential world-changing strengths of the largest generation (78 million born between 1980 and 2000) since the Boomers. Based on 1,200 interviews, the authors provide understanding of this group in a way that might help us make disciples who will shape the world for Christ.
The Living Church (IVP, 2007) by the late John Stott is a collection of the author’s thinking on what the church has been and what the church should be as the representation of Jesus Christ. Even as Scripture bending and indifference creep through
the halls, Stott encourages Christians to live and lead boldly and biblically.
Metrospiritual (Resource Publications, 2011) by Sean Benesh is an analysis of metropolitan church planting rooted in survey research among church planters in seven large cities in the U.S. and Canada, and grounded by the personal journey of the author. Benesh has planted churches throughout North America and is helping to start a work in Vancouver with the North American Mission Board.
The Team that Jesus Built (New Hope, 2011) by Janet Thompson is a woman leader’s guide to team building based on the model Jesus demonstrated during His earthly ministry. From developing and motivating a team of women to letting go and allowing the team to do its work, Thompson addresses the challenges and triumphs women experience in leading a team and empowering teams to do the ministry of the Church.
