Navy Seal Success

reserves. Following that Ross Perot off ered him a job. White said Perot told him, “You’ve got a job with me. I don’t want you to take it though without a burning desire; I want you to turn it down.”

White said he wanted to take it, but he didn’t have a passion for computers. “I didn’t have direction; I didn’t have a goal. I sat there fl oundering while I went back home and worked for my dad selling insurance.

One day in a restaurant White got an idea for making laminated paper fold fl at, and three months later his U.S. patent was approved and Frog Map was born. “I had to prove to everyone my idea would work,” White said. “I worked for my dad; at night I worked 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. as a night auditor and as a substitute teacher in the day-time. On the week-ends I waited tables. I didn’t want to spend any of my seed money. I was

so broke. I sold my car to pay for the fi rst run of maps.” And so began White’s rags to riches story. He fi nally had a goal, a focus, and enough persistence to make it work.

“I was willing to sacrifi ce, willing to swallow my pride and willing to work for pennies to have a chance, but still, I was not guaranteed success.

Success came as the map maker became a map laminator, and as he worked on his largest job, 1.3 million laminated maps for State Farm Insurance, he hired 21 workers working seven days a week for 3 months. His business was so profi table he was able to purchase and pay for his home, 26 acres behind it including a landing strip, an airplane and security for his family of six.

Since the advent of GPS systems White has had to come up with a new product.

White said he has always found that he must have an idea, set a goal and focus until he reaches his goal.

“Next year we will be selling football coaches’ special paper and laminate for football game plans those folds. The product is called Game Plan Paper,” White said. “You have to innovate in order to survive.”

White said he has always found that he must have an idea, set a goal and focus until he reaches his goal. Of course, it helps if you know what you want to do. Many times White said he went through the back door to succeed. And succeed he has. h
