Welcome to the South Bay
If you follow just one suggestion out of all the suggestions on the following pages, let it be this one: Walk across the sand to the ocean’s edge. Then, go in the water. Or, if the water’s too cold or too rough to swim in, walk along the water’s edge. North or south, it doesn’t matter. The ocean informs every aspect of beach life, from its food, art, architecture and dress to work habits (good and bad), physical conditioning (good), peculiar, high pitched accents (dolphins?) and chaotic behavior (from the chaos theory that governs wind and waves and people who study the wind and waves). After you’ve rinsed the sand from your feet and drained the saltwater from your ears, then you’re ready for a Margarita and fish tacos while waiting to see the green flash. Or rent a bike for a ride along The Strand, with the ocean on one side of you and ocean- inspired homes on the other. All those people you see whom you think should be working? You’ll under- stand why they aren’t soon enough.
