REDONDO BEACH SPRINT TRIATHLON

 This USAT sanctioned event consists of a 1/2-mile swim, 6- mile bike, and 2-mile run. Space is limited to first 600 entries. A non-competitive mini-sprint (half the distances) is also avail- able. 7:30 a.m. at the Veteran’s Park/Marina area in Redondo Beach. The spectator-friendly course follows the beach, along Vista del Mar. Proceeds benefit Cheer for Children, which gives seasonal parties and raises money for acutely ill children at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. www.rbtriathlon.com.

CHEVRON MANHATTAN GRAND PRIX

 One of the country’s oldest (50 years) and most prestigious cycling street races was founded by local racing legend Ted Ernst. It features top professional cyclists racing a technically challenging 1.3 mile course with two straight-aways and two 180 degree turns.. The popular community races include divi- sions for adults and kids. 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Spectators may line the straight-aways but are protected by guard rails at the turns.
