SOUTH BAY CALENDAR OUTDOOR CONCERTS
July through August Take your pick of outdoor concerts: on the beach, on the pier or in the park throughout July and August. Redondo Pier: Bands range from jazz and flamenco to pro- gressive rock on Tuesdays and Saturdays, 6 to 8 p.m. Hermosa Beach pier: Indie bands perform on beach stage south of the pier, while picnickers spread out their blankets on the sand. Aug. 7, 14 & 21; 6 p.m. Polliwog Park: Mira Costa’s award winning high school band, the Hyperion Outfall Serenaders (Manhattan’s official band), and national touring cover bands perform in a natural amphitheater while families picnic on the grass. 1601 Manhattan Beach Blvd. Manhattan Beach. Sundays at 5 p.m. through Labor Day weekend.
INTERNATIONAL SURF FESTIVAL
Fri.-Sun., July 29-31 Redondo, Hermosa, Manhattan, Torrance Beaches
The world’s premier watermen, waterwomen and vol- leyball players converge on the three beach cities for three days of spirited competition in the water and on the sand. The festival start Friday night with lifeguards from around the country and Australia competing in swim, dory, surf ski and paddleboard races. Saturday night, Southern California lifeguards compete in relay races for the prestigious Taplin Bell Award. Events for the public include surfing and body surfing; a two-mile beach run and sand soccer (all Sat. morning); the six man volleyball
