Patients become good friends
Jackie Low, 44, is a
chemotherapy nurse at Spire Hartswood Hospital in Brentford
M
y nursing career started in Aberdeen way back in 1985. I trained in general nursing, but it wasn’t until I looked after the BBC sports presenter Helen
Rollason, who was going through treatment for bowel cancer, that I felt the urge to do something different. Looking after Helen changed my life. We shared the same birthday, and over the course of her treatment we became quite close. When she died in August 1999 it made me think about working full-time with people with cancer. I paid for myself to go on the chemotherapy course, and when the opportunity to become a day sister on an oncology unit came up, I went for it. I’ve been in my current job for over five years and absolutely love it. Some patients become good friends and we share their triumphs and tragedies. I love the personal service we give and wouldn’t want to work anywhere else.
