Building competency in the offshore industry through collaboration T
he global demand for the development of a skilled workforce for the offshore oil and gas industry is
becoming both a challenge to many organisations as well as an opportunity for growth. A number of organisations are now seeking to produce a competent workforce for the various types of offshore oil and gas installations. Local or regional legislations requiring employment of local workforce is creating a solution to the demands for workforces. However, many of the countries where oil and gas productions facilities are situated are where locals have yet to be trained – or at least undergo formal education and training.
IMOSTI Inc is an organisation dedicated to training
and educating the offshore oil and gas workforce. It has collaborated with industry organisations to understand how to train and educate people where ever they are. Collaboration with stakeholders in the industry is timely, as IMOSTI foresees greater demand for training and competence. The OPITO oil and gas academy,
which specialises in building training standards for the offshore oil and gas workforce, has set global standards of competence as well as standards on how training providers globally can implement such standards uniformly. Yet another development will affect such standards
of training considering – the 2010 ratification of the Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) as amended has now been implemented by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). As it comes into force within the next couple of years or so, the competence requirements for all sea-based personnel will changed the current landscape in training and education. In anticipation of these changes IMOSTI Inc, along with other services orientated organisations, had established C-NERGY Group. C-NERGY stands for Conglomeration of Energy. It represents the six organisations who are notable service providers in the maritime and offshore oil and gas industry fields. The
individual organisations are involve in maritime training and education, offshore safety training and technical skill development, offshore manpower and human resources services, offshore facility management, housekeeping and catering services. The C-NERGY Group aims to provide solutions for
human resources requirements – from skills development to manpower staffing, to training and education to deployment.
IMOSTI Inc not only provides training in offshore oil and gas but it also provides services for human resource development. The C-NERGY Group is a total service provider of human resources onboard any sea-based facilities worldwide. ●

UK secures well capping device to strengthen oil spill contingency
O
il & Gas UK has confirmed the start of manufacturing of a well capping device which will become a key
element of the UK offshore oil and gas industry’s oil spill response contingency plans. Completion of the device is due this summer. The cap’s construction follows the recommendation of the Oil Spill Prevention and Response Advisory Group, the body set up by the industry, following the blow-out in the Macondo well. The design development was overseen by OSPRAG’s Technical Review Group, working with BP, which agreed
to project manage the detailed design, procurement and construction phases, and engineering services firm J P Kenny. The device has been commissioned by the industry’s specialist organisation, Oil Spill Response Ltd, and is being built by Cameron Ltd in Leeds. The cap is modular in design, with specifications
which allow it to be deployed in the widest range of possible oil spill scenarios that could typically be encountered in the UK continental shelf, including West of Shetlands. The device, deployable from a multi service
vessel, can be attached to various parts of the subsea equipment in order to seal off or ‘cap’ the flow of oil. The new cap complements other work being
carried out by the UK industry in oil spill prevention. It demonstrates the industry’s “determination to learn from experience and continuously improve the safety of operations.“ ●
