TRAINING JOURNAL
WITH MEGAN HANSLEY
MONDAY, APRIL 17TH
Today was the first day back to practice after our exhibition at U.S. Senior Nationals in Ohio. We had great swims at our exhibition, and our head coach Mayu Fujiki was pleased with our performance. Although we did get good positive feed- back, it was really beneficial for us to hear constructive criti- cism on our routines from the experienced U.S. judges. It was the first time that we showcased our newly
choreographed Team Technical Program and Duet Technical Program, so hearing others’ opinions is a vital step in our process of finishing choreography.
At the start of practice this morning we brought out the video of our swims and our team TV to analyze how we did. We went over which parts really shone and impressed and which parts are going to need altering and work.
After this video session, we got to work in the water and focused on those rough sections of our routine. We brain- stormed alternative choreography for some parts and tried to think of more ideas that would really highlight our talents. At 11:30 it was time for us to get out, eat a quick lunch and head to St. Vincent’s for Physical Therapy and our weights workout (conveniently located in the same building!) Two hours later after working up a sweat, we were back in the pool once more for our second practice. Our last three hours in the water were very productive and were followed by an intense hour of landrill (where we mimic our swimming routines on land so that we can continue to per- fect them even out of the water). Around 6 PM we headed home to a restful dinner and relaxation time to prepare for another day of working hard!

We started the morning with our daily gymnastics warm-up. This warm-up was created by the USOC’s Ron Brandt to help develop our flexibility, mobility and core strength.
TUESDAY, APRIL 18TH
This morning in the water we focused on our team elements in the technical routine. It is important that we keep up our technical skills as we are choreographing our routines, because elements are a significant portion of our score in the Technical Program. In between practices on Tuesday the team gets to enjoy a leisurely lunch at the pool. Some of us are found reading, napping, or doing homework.
Coming back to practice refreshed and energized, we returned to work in the water working on our technical skills in both the Free and Technical Team program. This afternoon we started swimming larger sections of our routines. Since we are heading to the Brazil Open in 6 weeks, now is the time where we shift our focus off of choreography and start piecing together our routines. In a few weeks we will be swimming the programs all the way through multiple times, so these next weeks are time for us to build up the small parts into larger sections.
