Taraji P. Henson celebrates “A Night for Philanthropy” with Central State University

The Division of Institutional Ad- vancement hosted “A Night for Philanthropy” at the Schuster Per- forming Arts Center in downtown Dayton, Ohio. The April event, at- tended by 300 alumni and friends of the University, featured guest speaker Taraji P. Henson.

The purpose of “A Night for Philanthropy” is to celebrate alumni and friends of the University for their lifetime giving and to recognize individuals who have made planned and/or principal gifts to the University. Such gifts help build the endowment, strengthen academic programs and services,

enhance the learning environment and expand scholarship opportunities.

“A Night for Philanthropy” ceremony celebrated individuals for both The Sustaining Philanthropist Society and The 1887 Legacy Society.

Henson, a graduate of Howard University, is a nationally renowned actress. She has starred in numerous major motion pictures, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress opposite Brad Pitt in David Fincher’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.”

Henson’s remarks focused on how “lessons learned” at her alma mater played a prominent role in her career, the significant role black colleges and universities play in educating today’s youth, and why CSU alumni should be applauded for their giving to the University.

14 CENTRAL STATE UNIVERSITY

The Sustaining Philanthropist Society consists of donor recognition societies through

which the University expresses appreciation for the generous and sustained lifetime giving from its University family. The Sustaining Philanthropist Society is designed to encourage contributors to make multi-year gifts to support the University and its planned growth.

Central State University established The 1887 Legacy Society in 2007 as a way to honor members of our University family who have designated a principal or legacy gift to the University. Today, there are 44 alumni and friends inducted into the 1887 Legacy Society.

Both Societies are open to anyone who has a desire to ensure the future of Central State University. Vice Pres- ident of Institutional Advancement Anthony Fairbanks made a distinc- tion between the two Societies saying, “The Sustaining Philanthropist Society is essentially cash gifts made over a period of time. The Society gives anyone an opportunity to be a philanthropist by making a pledge and paying the pledge over a three- to-five year period. The 1887 Legacy Society represents deferred giving or planned giving. So, in effect, the Sustaining Philanthropist Society will provide continual contributions to fund University initiatives, while gifts garnered through The 1887 Legacy Society typically begin as non-cash gifts and are converted to cash at a later date.”

April 14, 2011 was the first induction ceremony for the Sustaining Philanthropist Society. The first induction ceremony for the 1887 Legacy Society was held on April 5, 2007. Fairbanks noted that the creation of the Sustaining Philanthropist Society was necessary to “adequately honor the vision, energy and commitment of the great men and women whose generous gifts built the legacy of excellence that has shaped Central State University. Both societies are of equal importance to the fundraising success of the University.”
