Teacher education collaboration UNIVERSITY EVENTS August
In late spring, the Colleges of Education and Arts & Science collaborated to facilitate a seminar on teacher preparation. When you entered the Center for Education and Natural Sciences you saw a picture of outstretched hands representing a diverse body synonymous with togetherness and connectivity. Connectivity, moving forward and reaching a mutual goal was the main purpose of the “Commitment to Excellence: Seminar on Teacher Preparation.”
Dr. Reginald Nnazor, Dean of the College of Education, introduced the vision for the seminar as a beacon to bring together the College of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences to better prepare teacher candidates (CSU students majoring in education). The seminar reflected a monumental collaboration between the two colleges. Dr. Jahwara Giddings, seminar coordinator and Chair of the Department of Humanities says, “The effort to have Arts and Sciences collaborate with the College of Education is essential to any plan for teaching preparation excellence and CSU student growth.”
The event included breakout sessions specifically designed for K-12 administrators, faculty, staff, leaders, and teacher candidates to find a common vision among the groups. The groups were established to give a group-by-group approach to discuss the pitfalls, challenges and obstacles facing future teachers today, specifically CSU teacher candidates, and how those challenges can be abated. As one of the invited K-12 administrators,
Superintendent for Springfield City Schools Dr. David Estrop says, “Springfield City Schools wants good partnerships. I commend CSU for taking the time to work on improving their program and taking the steps to move in the right direction.”

The success of Central State University’s teacher candidates depends on this kind of collaboration. “It really gave me an opportunity to see some grounded professionals who do what I aspire to do,” says Antonio Williams, teacher candidate majoring in adolescent and young integrated language arts. “This seminar allowed me to take a look at myself as a student and future educator in regard to the things I need to do to be able to compete in such a competitive field.”
The Central State University team of dedicated faculty, staff and teacher candidates hope to work together to move forward to make Central State University’s education program one of the best in the nation.
