Sometimes it feels as though we are spending more time reducing our carbon footprint and meeting the latest energy efficiency legislation than we spend actually doing our real jobs. Sadly this is not something we can get away from and whether your company is large or small the fact remains that everyone is expected to do their bit.
The real question therefore is how you can do your bit without it becoming a time consuming experience which is detrimental to your business.
There is no simple answer, I wish there was, but there are many
ways to save energy which range from simply turning off lights to the installation of simple controls which will maximise the efficiency of the building in which you work. You can still walk around many major towns and cities at night and see lights blazing long after the employees have gone home for the evening, and despite the fact that energy saving is a very high profile topic, some people it seems are failing to take notice. Recycling is another area where changes need to be made, and in this industry in particular we really can make a difference. There are now numerous schemes for the recycling of empty cartridges and substrates, all of which answer the demand for traceability and ensure that the waste which we generate does not add to the increasing landfill mountain.
One of the major challenges is in understanding your current activity in order to make savings. Granted this isn’t an easy task, but it is one which we must embrace in order to make the necessary changes, because your customers will expect it.
As an industry we have met and overcome many challenges in the past few years so let’s work towards the next one. Now is the time to ask yourself if you could make savings and what changes your business needs to make in order to achieve them – it could be easier and more cost effective than you think.
See you next month Tracey
