ENTRY LEVEL HD

S

ony’s NXCAM and HDV range provides an entry level path into the world of HD shooting, and are essential camcorders

for productions shot on a budget, in remote locations or in challenging conditions. The HXR-NX5E is Sony’s first NXCAM camcorder and it redefines the performance and features expected of a handheld professional camera of this class. NXCAM camcorders feature full 1920 x 1080 25p AVCHD recording, linear PCM audio and other professional functions including Sony’s 20x zoom G Lens and a 3 chip 1/3 inch Exmor CMOS sensor as well as hybrid SD/HD recording onto memory cards. We talk to producer MediaMotos which has tested the NX5E on outdoor sporting events and find out how Sony’s HDV cameras were used extensively on location forWatch’s The TA and The Taliban.

Small cameras that think big

Producer MediaMotos has a very specific niche in the world of sports production – providing footage of a wide range of sporting events from the back of a motorbike for broadcasters. As MediaMotos’ Jason Jenkins explains it’s a

job best done by a small camera operator kitted out with small, high quality professional cameras. For Jenkins the HXR-NX5E, used on a range of

cycling events across the UK, fits the brief better than any other handheld pro camcorder. That’s because its very light – weighing in

at 2.2kg – a must on endurance events such as cycling shot over many hours. Another really useful feature is the camera’s Active Steady Shot stabilisation technology, which allows the operator to focus more on composition rather then keeping the camera steady. Says Jenkins: “Typically we need to run footage from bike events through

image stabilisation software before delivery, but with the NX5E that wasn’t such a big issue.” It’s also the first camcorder of its class to

feature a built-in GPS locator, which can be useful when trying to find specific footage of a race. “It allows us to tell the editor that the race was won on a particular mountain at these specific GPS co- ordinates,” explains Jenkins, who hired the NX5E from rental firm Hireacamera.com. But the NX5E’s best feature was card based

recording. “We typically have a very short window where we can download footage onto a Mac Book and external hard drive, a procedure done on the way back from a shoot. Shooting onto 16GB SD cards speeds up the ingest hugely and means that we don’t have tapes to carry. if we need to we can even swap the cards on the back of the bike.”
