REVISITING THE HEAT OF BATTLE DoP Matt Broad describes why the SRW-9000PL and PMW-F3 were lined up to shoot Warrior’s Graveyard

The lives and deaths of ancient warriors is the focus of Warrior’s Graveyard, a C4/Nat Geo co- pro from October Films in which the skeletons of fallen soldiers are exhumed and re-examined to reconstruct how they died. Based on interviews with military experts and dramatic reconstructions of the battlefield injuries sustained, the series required a camera set up capable of shooting high quality HD drama for the re-enacted fight sequences. DoP Matt Broad explains why the SRW-9000PL and PMW-F3 from 24-7 Drama were lined up for the job.


“Both cameras offer a


high quality 35mm look and filmic depth of field as well a compact form so we could get in amongst the action,” he explains. On the Navy of the Damned episode, which focused on the fighting men on the 19th British navy, much of the shooting was done

Trincomalee. Broad recalls: “When you have action and pyrotechnics such as canons firing, it’s always good to have more than one camera running to get another angle. We were able to tuck the F3 away in a nook in the vessel to get another shot. We shot a lot of handheld to capture the energy of a full-on battle at sea. Whilst the camera is light enough for handheld or shoulder-mounted shots in the vessel’s cramped confines, it also has a PL mount for a wide choice of lenses, in this case Zeiss Ultra Primes.” With the 9000PL shooting to HDCAM SR, there


was no need to worry about data management. “As we were on the road in a range of locations we wanted to be able to just hand over the tapes,” says Broad. “Overall the 9000PL is a great camera, well thought out with an uncomplicated menus system familiar to anybody used to Sony cameras.”
