Message from the President and CEO

Setting our sights on a healthier Washington County

Like many area families, my family is spending most of summer 2011 right here in Washington County. Biking, hiking, baseball, festivals, the farmers market, parks, lakes, and rural vistas make this a great place for a “stay-cation.” Not to mention the high cost of gasoline keeping us closer to home.

Life is good for most of the 131,887 people who call Washington County home. In fact, County Health Rankings* ranked our county No. 3 among the state’s 72 counties in terms of health outcomes and fifth in overall health factors. But, beyond the rankings, many people in our county still face serious concerns. Te upcoming United Way of Washington County campaign reminds us that there are many people in our community who are in need of our help.

As your community hospital, Froedtert Health St. Joseph’s Hospital wanted to dig deeper to identify the most important needs in our area. In partnership with Froedtert Health Community Memorial Hospital, this year we conducted a Community Health Needs Assessment for Washington County, interviewing over 30 government, private and non-profit agencies and churches about unmet needs and barriers to care. St. Joseph’s Hospital will use this information to better understand and focus on the county’s needs in a proactive way.

Te community counts on St. Joseph’s Hospital for high-quality emergency care, inpatient and outpatient care, and delivering babies. But

Michael Laird President/CEO,

Froedtert Health St. Joseph’s Hospital

health care is not something that takes place only in a hospital or a doctor’s office – it’s how we care for ourselves and each other every day.

We know that healthy lifestyles and education can help prevent chronic disease, strengthen families and create a healthier, vibrant place to live, work and play. Some of the many ways we’ve been doing that include funding health initiatives through the new Healthy Community Fund and St. Joseph’s Community Foundation.

With our Froedtert & Te Medical College of Wisconsin and Froedtert Health partners, we also offer classes and programs in conjunction with local organizations such as the Kettle Moraine YMCA, Museum of Wisconsin Art and University of Wisconsin–Washington County. We take lead roles in events such as the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, provide specially trained nurses to care for victims of sexual assault in our ER and lend support to the Albrecht Free Clinic.

St. Joseph’s Hospital and Froedtert Health will continue working to know and serve the changing needs of our community. We want to be your partner in making our home community a better place all year round.
