Global concerns

ttending the Intersolar conference in Munich was an excellent opportunity to witness the changing dynamics of the photovoltaic industry. The size of the event was the first impression. With nearly 80,000 visitors every nook and cranny as well as all 15 halls were put to use. While scale shows the potential in the market, similar sized industries suggests there are more companies than the market requires. Size continued to be differentiator inside the halls with the tier one companies competing in grand style for booth size and complexity. Nestled within were the growing number of energy companies starting to muscle into the market place. Total announced it had picked up SunPower demonstrating the multinationals desire for industry growth. This is a key driver for large companies wishing to expand a global footprint while establishing brand recognition before the market jostling begins.

A

The impact of market place struggles is felt along the value chain with tier two and three companies finding it hard to penetrate into a crowded market place. Some will hope to be caught up in the impending buying spree but small manufacturers will struggle to make ends meet. The industry momentum no longer relies solely on generous subsidies. Economic viability has attracted financial interest driving company’s to compete for attention before well known brands enter the fray. The extent of the efforts was made clear with Yingli announced its World Cup sponsorship in dramatic fashion and Trina Solar announcing ventures with Hollywood star Patrick Dempsey involving racing and a charity to provide PV to hospitals and schools in poor areas.

In amongst the razzamatazz was evidence of the origins of solar as an energy alternative that reduced fuel poverty. Groups like the Alliance for Rural Electrification showed transforming application possibilities for remote areas. There was film makers and adventurers keen to promote solar power. These groups are showing projects not based on charity but profitable concerns for all concerned. Intersolar provides you with an extreme look at an expanding industry but is in danger of allowing itself to become too large in process, diluting any focus you may gain from such events. Like the industry it will evolve and change and the industry will mature economically as well as socially. Unlike other industries, PV began with a social conscious so it is reasonable to hope that the changes over the next few years does not submerge innovation and opportunities with the need to increase the bottom line.
