10 Questions with... John Smykala
Each month we ask an industry professional the Tomorrow’s FM ten questions. This month, we chatted to John Smykala, Managing Director
of RMD Power & Cooling.
Q1 What was your first job? My first job was with National Semiconductors, working in supply chain management.
Q2How did you get into the FM industry?
By mistake!
Q3Who, in any other industry, do you most admire?
I’ve always had a lot of respect for Lord Alan Sugar and the way he built himself up from nothing.
Q4If money was no object, what car would you buy?
An Astin Martin.
Q5How would you improve the FM industry?
I think that more openness and communication would have a really positive impact.

Q6 What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I didn’t mind too much what I did, as long as I was able to work for a company that would allow me to see the world.
Q7What do you do to unwind? Fishing (badly).
Q8If you could have a dinner party with any three people, dead
or alive, with one cooking and another providing the music, who would they be and why? Family means a lot to me so the guests would have to be my parents and my wife Fiona, who is also my business partner. You couldn’t beat Jim Morrison from The Doors providing the music and I think we’d have a good old knees up if Keith Floyd was in charge of the food.
Q9What, do you think, is the future of the FM industry?
I think we’ll see a lot more integration and consolidation with large scale national agreements becoming more commonplace. I also worry about the threat from large facilities companies squeezing out the small guys.
