SOUNDALIKES

Best gig played: Leeds Guitar Show 2010

Worst gig played: Probably our drummer's birthday bash – not because the gig was bad, but because my 16 month-old son decided to re-enact the vomiting scene from The Exorcist two songs into the set – covering his mother, and the other kids in the process.

Describe your sound: Heavy, bluesy, rock

Is there a website? Oh yes. www.gavcoulsongroup.co.uk

MARK PIRRO - Polyphonic Spree & Menkena

I am currently playing a Stingray that I’ve severely modified. I took out the active electronics and the block pickup and replaced it with a passive P bass pickup. I love the sound of a Precision bass, but love the feel of the Stingray. For my amp I use a Fender BXR 300

with a single 15. It’s nothing special, but it’s rugged, compact and plenty loud. I use it more like a monitor and let the PA do most of the work. In the past I haven’t used many effects, but recently I’ve been experimenting with a number of pedals. It’s been a struggle to find a suitable bass distortion, as most distortion pedals lose the low end when the effect is engaged. I’ve tried running two

signals in parallel – one distorted, one clean – but more often than not, this approach is subject to phase shifting, which can suck the low end out of the signal. However, I am using a handy pedal

by FEA Labs to solve this problem. I split the signal and run one clean into channel one of the FEA Labs and the other into a WMD Geiger Counter (for distortion) and out into channel two of the FEA Labs. The two signals can be blended to taste and it allows me to have all the grind I want along with my clean tone with all its low end. I am also using an EHX Freeze

pedal. It’s an effect that allows you to loop any note indefinitely.
