he MIA believes strongly in the need to offer all possible
support to the shops in the UK. Offering training courses for shop staff and management is one important aspect of this and we are delighted to have some news about a new service we are about to launch. It is a new training programme that is available to all shops with the option of an Accreditation Award that can be promoted to customers as an assurance of quality service. There are loads of off -the-
shelf retail training courses available, but finding one that actually understands the world of selling instruments is not easy. In short, we had to find
a training partner who had worked in MI and who had experienced the challenges of running a successful musical instrument shop. Kevin Steel of Red Badger
is our partner and many of you will know him from his work at Roland, as well as prior experience with both ABC Music and Sound Control. What you may not know is that he previously had his own chain of music stores (X-Music) as a subsidiary of Richer Sounds, one of the best exponents of High Street customer service. We decided that we
needed a new one-day event that was an inspirational day for both shop staff and owner/managers. It will focus on:
Selling skills – meeting the needs of existing musicians
as well as new customers Visual merchandising – a better displayed shop to
encourage greater sales Product demonstration skills – structured learning
and demonstrating People skills – Giving customers and excellent
experience Building relationships –
customers for life Time/data management – being pro-active This has to be about
selling more instruments and the course makes no apology for that. But why bother with accreditation? Well, think of when you want a plumber. You normally go for one
with the CORGI logo on the back of a van or in Yellow Pages. We want the same with

Attending a one-day course for shop staff and

on July 14th and our first actual course is taking place on Wednesday July 27th (both at Shure HQ). The course costs £150 plus
VAT per delegate (MIA members) and £199 plus VAT (non-MIA members).
