Sheet Music BOOK OF THE MONTH

The Resurrection of Johnny Cash Graeme Thompson This was one of a couple of books from Jawbone to vie for MI Pro’s Book of the Month slot, but in the end, the sheer weight of significance of the subject matter in this volume won out. Starting at a sorry little cabaret gig in

Bognor Regis’ Butlins in 1993, Thompson traces one of the most remarkable comebacks in the history of modern music. Johnny Cash had, of course, been dropped by CBS in

1986 and from there he had slowly declined to the very back of the ‘where are they now?’ file. However, less than a year after

the Butlins gig, Cash was being introduced to an invited audience of 150 VIPs by Johnny Depp, having performed on U2’s Zooropa album and completed the first of this American Recordings with the Midas- like Rick Rubin. While covering Cash’s well- documented problems with drink, drugs, religion and health in the

1960s, Thompson looks most closely at the ten years that elapsed from 1986 to 1995, from the very depths of tasteless obscurity to the second pinnacle of Cash’s career at the bitter end of his life, in order to find out how this happened. New interviews with the likes of Rosanne Cash, Will Oldham and Adam Clayton add fresh perspectives and great insight into the incredible climax of this unique star. Jawbone: 020 7720 3581

1. Percussion-DVD Pitti Hecht For those in any doubt as to which percussion instrument they would like to take on, this is very likely the DVD to resolve the issue. Pitti Hecht goes through the sounds, styles and techniques of some 160 instruments from bongos and congas to talking drums and Boomwhackers. During this hour-and-a-half DVD, Hecht’s enthusiasm will likely make the prospective percussionist want them all. Voggenreiter (Mel Bay): 020 8214 1222

3. Electric Bass (Complete Edition) David Overthrow Another of Alfred’s tutorial series compiled into one A-to-Z volume, this time bringing together all of Overthrow’s excellent bass guitar teaching. This book contains clear descriptions and illustrations, examples of playing and soloing (ouch), tips for musical development, skill-building exercises and a lot more – for beginners, intermediates and advanced players. If it’s relevant to bass guitar, it’s in this one. Alfred (Faber): 01279 828989

2. The Songwriting Sourcebook Rikki Rooksby Rooksby returns with an updated version of this tome, which itself is a continuation of his How to Write Songs on Guitar. He focuses on three and four-chord structures, building to more complex sequences in both major and minor, taking in a lot of the tricks of the trade, such as key changes, turnarounds and voicings with sixths, sevenths and ninths. Backbeat/Hal Leonard (Music Sales): 01284 702600

4. Conga Basics Pitti Hecht Unlike the DVD, in this book Hecht gets down to some quite focused playing techniques on just one instrument. This staple of the Latin sound is considered in some detail, from its history, the basics of the instrument and playing techniques, through to some quite involved rhythmic lessons. A must for the would-be conga player. Comes with demo CD. Voggenreiter (Mel Bay): 020 8214 1222

5. Tone Manual Dave Hunter This should really come with a health warning, pointing out that guitarists could well disappear from public view for months once in possession of this book – and non-guitarists will lose the will to live should they be subjected to any of its contents. Hunter takes his considerable experience and knowledge of guitar tone and examines it in minute detail. How do the greats get their sound? What is ‘good guitar tone’? All will be revealed.
