AS I am once again about to embark on the annual
mikedolbear.com clinic tour, this year with the great UK drummer Gavin Harrison, I thought I would air the concerns that I have had for the past couple of years. Music retail has been hit by the recession, as we all
know, but drum shops have not been hit quite as badly as other music shops because of the accessories side of our business. If customers can’t afford a new kit they still have the option of buying a snare drum or a cymbal and, of course, every drummer needs sticks and heads and this has kept many shops going. But we have lost a few - ProPerc being our highest profile so far. Over at
mikedolbear.com we started a campaign called

‘use them or lose them’ to try and encourage customers back into the stores and support UK drum shops. We hope that our clinic tours help encourage this. These events are a great way of getting regular customers and new ones through the door. Some 33 years after working in Henrit’s drum store on Wardour Street (London) as a Saturday boy, coming up on the train from Brighton with my Dad, I still love the look, sound and atmosphere of a drum shop. It’s a cliché but true – us drummers are a special breed. We all need to do whatever we can to get customers
back into stores whether it’s through clinics, dealer days or small workshops. And let the customer know that if they need some sticks or a snare head on the way to a gig or rehearsal, they are going to find it difficult if their drum shop has closed down. So we ask consumers to use them or lose their local
drum store. I’ll see you at a show during the year.
