I’M SURELY not the only one that’s noticed a lot of nostalgia floating around at the moment, and not just in the MI industry. Perhaps they feel it’s a way of helping
us cope during these tough times, but in recent years we’ve seen car makers redesign and re-release old favourites, fashion brands bring back ‘60s-style
trends and now, although it never really went away, the synthesizer has been slowly clawing its way back onto our new product pages, to the point where it can now be considered a common feature. What’s really interesting though is how three of the big
Japanese MI companies – Yamaha, Roland and Korg – all made a big deal of their new synths at this year’s Musikmesse. For the latter two, the Jupiter-80 and Monotribe were among their biggest launches at the show. But when you look at the way popular music is heading,
it’s easy to see why. Although there’s (thankfully) no sign yet of a new Duran Duran or Gary Numan, big current acts like Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem and La Roux have all helped make the synth cool again. With Yamaha’s new MOX Synthesizers offering 1,200 voices and Roland incorporating its acclaimed Supernatural technology into the Jupiter-80, the list of weird and bizarre noises that can now be conjured up is virtually endless. With the synth being undoubtedly one of the easiest
ways for musicians to break through, you can expect to see more interest from end users in this type of gear. So if you haven’t already, maybe this sector is well worth looking into.
