Here’s to you, Coach Murphy. In April, Eastern welcomed new men’s basketball coach Rob Murphy. To start, Coach Murphy will need to spend time recruiting and getting to know his players. While he’s focusing on that, what should EMU present to him as a first-year welcome gift? A framed watercolor of the Ypsilanti water tower? An all-you-can-eat pass for The Commons? How about a MAC basketball championship? Now that’s a nice gift.
Only the beginning. Sarah Johnson became Eastern’s first individual medalist in women’s golf following the final round of the 2011 MAC cham- pionship tournament. Johnson dusted the competition, finish- ing seven strokes ahead of the field. The best part is she’s a sophomore. We’ve got two more years to enjoy her sweet swing before she hangs up her colle- giate cleats.
Anyone for pole vaulting? Good things come to those who wait. After 11 years, EMU’s women’s track and field team captured a conference champi- onship, coming from behind in grand fashion to secure the MAC indoor title in February. On the second day of the meet, Eastern scored 90 points, more than second-place Western Michigan earned during the entire cham- pionship (89). You could say the Eagles speedsters pole vaulted the competition.

First time’s a charm. Jordan Desilets, 29, an alum from Pinckney, won the 2010 Detroit Free Press Marathon with a time of 2:28:30. It was his first-ever attempt at running a marathon (some guys have all the luck). Of course, Desilets has a running background. He won the NCAA Division I 3,000-meter steeple- chase in 2004. We’re sure glad he didn’t forget what he learned after graduating.

Streaking swimmers. No, Eastern’s men’s swimming team didn’t race naked across campus. They’ve put together a streak of a different kind: 59 consecutive dual-meet victories. In fact, the team hasn’t lost a MAC dual meet since the 1997- 98 season. So what accounts for their ongoing success? We’re not sure, but it’s a safe bet there’s something in the water at Jones Natatorium.
What we did last season. So how did Eastern’s women’s basketball team fare? Well, for starters, the team won a school record 24 games. Junior Tavelyn James set an EMU record with 642 points (17.4 per game). The program won its first-ever post-season games by beating Michigan and UNC-Wilmington in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). You can bet coach AnnMarie Gilbert has her sights set on even bigger goals for next season. 3
