Talking points
Scent from above Firstly, can I say I love the mag? I am a complete foodie, though a hopeless cook, and having just moved to Surrey I was delighted to see something like this in the shops – I am still getting to know this area and enjoyed a lovely lunch at The Wiremill on your suggestion, so thank you! I couldn’t believe it when I read one of
the problems in Auntie Joan’s etiquette section regarding scented candles at the dinner table. My very good friend, who is a wonderful host, always lights scented candles at the dinner table and brushes away my polite complaints. It’s really off -putting trying to tuck into roast lamb with an overpowering fl oral waxy smell lingering under your nose. I shall take my copy of
with me
when we next meet for coff ee and casually pop Auntie Joan in front of her – I know she’ll love the magazine and will fi nally get the hint. Looking forward to the next issue. Andrew Stevens, Hazelmere
Elly’s a star
I know nothing about wine. Well, that’s not quite true actually, thanks to your wine expert Elly Munro. Her advice on which wines to buy was the fi rst I’ve read that made sense to me. I’ve always been intimidated by the huge choice of wine and could never taste the diff erent fl avours, but I was inspired by the way Elly pairs the various options with food. I bought the Viognier she wrote about and drank it with a chorizo dish, as she suggested. It all tasted wonderful and I’ll be trying some more of her fl avour combinations. I’m going to treat her pages as a kind of wine course and hope to learn lots. Thank you. Sally West, Ripley
(Sally, if you’re keen to learn more about wine, we think you’ll especially enjoy this month’s Wine Gadget on page 68)

WIN!
this week. I buy lots of diff erent food magazines, but none hit the did. I love eating out and but am a creature
of habit so I never venture beyond the places I already know. I was intrigued with your feature on riverside dining, because I had no idea I could eat by the river just down the road, so this weekend I hope to try out one of your recommendations. Your recipes had me salivating and I and plan to test the pavlova, on my family. Thanks for encouraging me to step outside of my comfort zone. Jenny Hatter, Cobham
The writer of this letter will receive a Galla Gelateria ice-cream maker worth £300. The writer of next month’s star letter will win a White and Black Food Processor from James Martin by Wahl. The 900W food processor features two speed settings, a 1.75L blender jug and a 1.75L processor bowl and retails at £84.99.
Here’s one I made earlier… Skye Meelboom from Witley cooked duck breast and served it with a redcurrant, red onion and orange sauce, baby new potatoes, beans and carrot purée. Skye,
’s production manager, says: ‘I cooked this one
Sunday lunch for my mum. I found the recipe online and then adapted it so I could use ingredients I had already. For instance I used a redcurrant and red onion chutney instead of the redcurrant sauce. We both really enjoyed it and it’s a recipe I’ll defi nitely do again.’
Next time you try a new recipe we’d love to see the results. Send your photos to
