UNDER £10 Wandering Bear
California, USA
RRP £6.99 Taylor’s Fine Wines, Lancelot Wines
Taste the Californian sunshine! The initial impression is all cherry, which leads into lovely rich spicy fl avours, making for very smooth and easy drinking. To accentuate the cherry, try pairing it with savoury dishes that have an element of sweetness to them, such as goat’s cheese and
caramelised onion tart or pork and apple sausage.
Redwood Creek Merlot California, USA RRP £7.39 Asda, Tesco, Morrisons This Californian merlot has intense cherry aromas, but the fruit here is less pronounced in the mouth than with the Wandering Bear. This is a dry, peppery merlot that really comes into its own when combined with curries and spicy food.
Jacob’s Creek Reserve Shiraz, Barossa, Australia £9.99 all major supermarkets This oak-matured shiraz has plumy aromas tinged with eucalyptus, which is rather pleasant. The high alcohol content (14.5 per cent) and big tannins make this shiraz a powerful, dry red, best suited to drinking with strongly fl avoured, high-protein foods such as hard cheeses or even game.

Viña Maipo Gran Reserva Shiraz 2010, Maule Valley, Chile £10.99 Sainsbury’s Again, the term gran reserva here has nothing to do with age and oak maturation. This wine has inviting aromas of cloves and chocolate that lead into some youthful cherry fl avours. The structure is light and fruity, with strong tannins presenting at the fi nish, making it a must to accompany high-protein foods such as hard cheeses and red meats.
Cono Sur 20 Barrels Pinot Noir,
Casablanca Valley, Chile £19.99 Morrisons, Waitrose Warm, seductive aromas of wild strawberry and ripe plum welcome the drinker into beautifully silky fl avours of fresh red berries with smoky, refi ned tannins. This is an elegant, luxurious wine and should ideally be paired with a fi ne, rich paté, where the delicate fruits of the wine will act in much the same way as perhaps a wonderfully subtle wild-berry jus.
Blason des Papes 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe, Rhône, France Waitrose
Save 1/3, £20.99 to £13.89
This wine has fresh, ripe aromas of morella cherry. The structure is not as weighty as a typical châteauneuf-du-pâpe, but there’s lots of fresh, ripe red fruit, a good pinch of black pepper spice and well-integrated tannins. A lovely wine to accompany rich dishes such as duck cassoulet.
