Wandering Bear Chardonnay California, USA

RRP £6.99 Taylor’s Fine Wines This chardonnay has clean, fresh aromas leading into bright citrus fl avours with a touch of pineapple and vanilla. The texture is soft and creamy, smooth and refreshing. Its creaminess makes it the perfect accompaniment for any fi sh or chicken dish with a butter or cream sauce, with the citrus notes adding a refreshing quality.

Redwood Creek Chardonnay California, USA

RRP £7.39 Asda, Tesco, Morrisons From the same region and grapes as the Wandering Bear, but the Redwood Creek is much zestier with more citrus bite. Crisp apple and grapefruit fl avours abound in this medium-bodied chardonnay, along with rich, toasty vanilla. This makes the Redwood better suited to fi sh or chicken dishes in a lemon sauce, with the toasty qualities adding a rich, depth of fl avour.

Jacob’s Creek Reserve Chardonnay

Adelaide Hills, Australia

RRP £9.99 all major supermarkets This Australian chardonnay was vinifi ed in oak barrel, which gives a more refi ned, toasty fl avour than the oak ‘treatment’ used in making many chardonnays. It’s a dry, powerful wine with very crisp, lemon acidity. It’s not buttery and it’s not subtle, which makes it a good accompaniment for

strongly fl avoured foods with a high fat content, such as roast chicken, baked Camembert and most blue cheeses.

Chateau Bonnet

Entre-Deux-Mers Reserve, Bordeaux, France

£10.49 Taylor’s Fine Wines

This blend of sauvignon, semillon and muscadelle has vibrant elderfl ower aromas that follow through into fresh, crisp fl avours, with added tastes of gooseberry and lime. It’s bright and zesty with depth and a soft, rounded fi nish. It’s a real favourite of mine, good with fi sh, seafood and chicken, as well as pasta and salads.

Viña Maipo Gran Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2010, Maule Valley, Chile £10.99 Sainsbury’s

The term ‘gran reserva’ would usually refer to age and oak maturation, but not so here. The Viña Maipo is a young sauvignon with no oak. It’s pleasant, with lemon aromas, light grapefruit fl avours and nice acidity. Strongly fl avoured food will overpower this subtle wine, so it’s one to enjoy well chilled by itself.

Dr Loosen Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett,

Mosel, Germany £11.99 Sainsbury’s

This is a medium sweet white with a lovely spritz, a subtle light fi zz that lightens the honeyed texture. The combination of spritz and sweet, zesty lemon notes creates a fl avour reminiscent of sherbet dib dabs. Smooth and easy drinking and great with

fresh summer fruits. You can create a completely diff erent experience by pairing it with strong blue cheese like Saint Agur, where the lemon notes become fabulously tangy.
