Off duty, Oprah is almost unrecognisable without her television get-up, which led to an amusing incident in 2005 when she went to the Hermes store in Paris and was turned away by the snooty manager. She could have thrown her weight as a celebrity with the “Don’t- you- know- who- I- am?!” line and demanded to be served, but that’s not her style. Te incident was widely reported in the media that it might be racially motivated. Staff at the Paris Hermes store said they had been “having problem with North Africans” and obviously tarnished her with the same brush. Te President and CEO of Hermes US, Robert Chavez, was invited to her show after the incident and took grovelling to a new height when he apologised profusely to Oprah on her show. Te big-hearted Oprah accepted the apology and encouraged people to continue shopping at Hermes.

The Farewell Show After 25 years and 4,561 shows later, a stellar cast of celebrities and an audience of 13,000 bid Oprah farewell on her final show in Chicago on 25 May 2011. Madonna, Beyonce, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith and all the A-listers were there to pay tribute, while Tom Hanks acted as Master of Ceremony. Madonna in her tribute said, “She has balls and a wealth of compassion and I have learned a lot from her.” Jada Pinkett Smith said, “You have no children but you have mothered millions.” Tere were enough tears from the audience to ‘cry me a river’ and 13,000 boxes of tissues were handed to each of them. But this is just the beginning. Te Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) may still take their top place in television broadcasting. No doubt Oprah, the goddess of broadcasting, will come up with something bigger and better. She plans to do a new prime time talk show called Oprah’s Next Chapter. Watch this space.
