Black is the new green

Tomorrow’s Cleaning Editor, Charlotte Taylor, reports on a true paper prodigy and the ultimate green champion – Satino Black.

When it comes to paper disposables, an issue that is regularly raised is the issue of sustainability. Many paper tissues, hand towels and hygienic tissues are made using recycled materials, but then they aren’t biodegradable, or they aren’t manufactured in a sustainable fashion. It can be difficult to get that essential green mix right.

I see many products in my line of work, some that leave me with my jaw hitting the floor in awe and others that leave me a little deflated, and this product certainly falls into the first category.

The much coveted title of World’s Most Sustainable Toilet Paper has been found and the crown rests on the ingenious head of Satino Black. Manufactured by Dutch

company, Van Houtum, under the flagship brand Satino, this paper prodigy ticks all the boxes when it comes to sustainability.

So why is this product so green? Satino Black is the only truly CO₂-neutral toilet and hand towel paper that is produced in an environmentally friendly process and is just as soft and white as normal hygienic paper despite being based on 100% recycled paper.

The brand is also the only one in the world to have won the right to display all of the FSC- recycled (Forest Stewardship Council), European Ecolabel and Cradle to Cradle hallmarks. The Cradle to Cradle Hallmark, in particular, is a huge achievement, as the evaluation process is extremely critical.

The Cradle to Cradle framework promotes eco-effectiveness over eco-efficiency, which essentially means that it’s not just about reducing the negatives, but increasing the positives too. All kinds of chemicals are used to produce the average, commercially available tissue paper, taking something that may seem simple to produce to a completely different level.

Together with research institute, EPEA, in Germany, all these chemicals have been analysed in detail to determine properties such as the presence of contaminants and biodegradability and chemicals that are not satisfactory have been replaced by natural and biodegradable ingredients. Satino Black has been specifically designed for biological recycling, meaning that it has no harmful
