WoolSafe responds toWhich?

An update: Since the May issue of Tomorrow’s Cleaning, Which? has released an updated report concerning the best carpet spot removers just released, WoolSafe evaluate whether their suggestions were taken onboard from the same report released in 2009…

In the last edition of Tomorrow’s Cleaning we published The WoolSafe Organisation’s reaction to the

original ‘Which?’ magazine report on carpet spot removers. With Which? taking onboard some of the Organisation’s original comments in its latest tests on the same products, we spoke to Ágnes Zsednai, Managing Director, to see how the status quo has changed:

“We carried out a series of investigations based on the original test results published by Which? some two years ago and after reporting our findings, Which? defended its stance as being ‘typical of what consumers would do’. However, the consumer resource did promise to take our comments on board when it prepared its next report. Now with that report published in the March edition of Which?, we have found both the tests and findings to be disappointingly similar to before. With this in mind, professional cleaners still

need to be on alert and be ready to rinse out sticky, foaming and re-soiling residues from persistent black spots!

“Chemical suppliers will also be disappointed with Which? denouncing the need for specialist products on certain stains, simply because some of the tested ones did not work they way they had anticipated. All is not lost however, as Which? has appeared to react positively to our initial criticisms regarding the washing-up liquid: at least the article now specifies a highly diluted solution of it. Which? still found the supermarket’s own brand spot treatments to perform well, but it appears it must have discovered the problems with re-soiling, as it is now recommending to rinse the spot with clean water as the last step in the cleaning process.

“We were encouraged to see that the report drew emphasis to the fact that there are several different kinds of Vanish spot removers, some of which are safe for use on carpet, while others can cause severe bleaching. Again, this shows the value of a reliable certification such as the WoolSafe Approved Mark to guide consumers

in their choice of carpet cleaning products.

“Professional carpet cleaners would be pleased that we managed to persuade Which? to include a reference to professional cleaning this time round, so at least in the case of extensive staining, a professional will be called before the situation is made worse through treatment by any old bottle under the sink. As a point of note, the magazine has also published our famed spot removing tips and a reference to our website. I suppose we should be grateful for these steps, but we do believe that more needs to be done to ensure an accurate and fair benchmark test of spot cleaners appears next time.”
