CASE STUDY MOTORWAY COPS

“When using Avid I feel I don’t have to worry about the technical side of things. It is so intuitive it just works leaving me freer to edit and be creative.”

CHRISTOPHER PITBLADDO Editor and creative director DB CREATIVE

Four months into his latest Avid refit and Christopher Pitbladdo from Edinburgh-based post house DB Creative sounds very happy with the upgrade of his five Avid Media Composer workstations. Currently sorting through over 600 hours of footage for the latest series of BBC1’s 5x60 minute factual series Motorway Cops from Folio Productions, Pitbladdo believes Media Composer’s main strength is its ability to seamlessly handle large amounts of HD video quickly and efficiently. Specifically he is impressed with the PhraseFind plugin, which enables rapid location of clips without the need to generate a transcript. Says Pitbladdo: “I’m a bit of a gadget fan so I loved ScriptSynch, where you can marry a transcript to each

master clip. It literally changed my life, saving hours and hours in the edit looking for soundbites. Now PhraseFind takes automated clip location a step further, he enthuses. “With this innovation you don’t need a transcript – it will search all your rushes phonetically. When you have hundreds of hours of material to be able to browse through it in minutes for a particular sound bite is an absolute game changing innovation. I still get a ‘wow’ reaction from directors who find they can track down a specific clip in minutes with just a few key words.” Another major step forward for Avid has been its Avid Media Access architecture, which makes working with different Avid systems simple and straightforward. “I know I can take a drive with me and copy it across to

another Avid in the knowledge that AMA will find the media – it’s another wonderful time saver.” On Motoway Cops Pitbladdo’s Media Composers have to deal with a range of footage, from sources such as Sony and Panasonic camcorders to police video footage and lipstick cams rigged to a DVCAM recorder in the car’s boot. “Avid handles the different formats brilliantly and flawlessly, whether it’s XDCAM, DV or DNxHD – it just works and you know that if it’s on the timeline it will play,” he insists. “For me using Avid I feel I don’t have to worry about the technical side of things. It is so intuitive it just works leaving me freer to edit and be creative. It gives you that confidence which you just don’t get with other editing systems.”
