The secret of seamless, file-based workflows is keeping it simple – particular on a huge series such as BBC1’s The Apprentice.

“What we deliver to customers these days is a lot more complex than it used to be,” says Jason Plews, senior manager at Avid Professional Services. “We used to ship [Avid editing systems] where you had a tape and you ingested, edited and played it back to tape. When the job was done you wiped the machine and started again. It’s a lot more complex these days, with shared storage and files coming in and files going out.” It’s such complexity in today’s broadcast sector that Avid

Plews joined Yorkshire TV in 1989 and took the broadcaster into the modern age of TV news production. 10 years later, he moved to Tektronix as a trainer for its broadcast newsroom solution. Tektronix joined with Avid to create iNEWS with Plews as training & consulting manager. In 2009, he became senior manager of the Avid Professional Services Consulting team

Professional Services was created to address. “It needs a high level of expertise, first to design [a system], scope it and make sure it fits the customer requirements,” says Plews of a typical project. “Then if we win the business there’s the delivery, the installation, the networking configuration and actually getting the customer on air.” “And there’s also the training and consulting, which is the team I lead. It looks at the human side of the project – what the impact is on the users, how people’s jobs are going to change, how we roll that into the design of the system so that it suits their requirements. We also train them in an effective way so that they can do their job as efficiently as possible in the new environment.”

1989, fresh out of university, Plews was taken on at Yorkshire Television to help implement new technology. “They were going from typewriters to computers in their newsroom,” he recalls. “My first job was to learn how everyone did their job in a news department, so I could understand how a computer could help them do their work. So from my very first day at work I’ve been involved in doing exactly the same thing – how technology can be used best for what people are trying to do.” “My skill really comes from that knowledge, of how people make TV programmes,” he continues. “We want technology to work for them, not the other way around.” One recent high-profile job for Avid Professional Services was the implementation of a tapeless HD production and post production workflow for Coronation Street. The well- established production team already had a streamlined tape-based production process in place, but Plews’ team of Avid consultants were able to assess the impact the technology change would have on the way the people were working. The resulting customised training courses and refocused production roles for the team made the move to tapeless a seamless shift.

Plews says this is his passion, getting technology to work for the production team. “I’ve climbed the management ladder,” he says “But one of the key things I bring to the job is that I’ve been a customer, I’ve done live television, I’ve done all the operational jobs, I’ve been a trainer. I understand what the customer is doing, what they need – it doesn’t mean I stop listening to the customer, because you always must listen to what the customer wants to do – but I’ve got that operational background.”

“I’m not an IT geek,” he adds. “I don’t talk in megabits. What I talk about is how people are going to make a TV or news programme and the change that technology will bring to their operation. It’s how we manage that and how we work with the customer to minimise disruption, optimise the way it’s used and ensure it’s implemented correctly.” Plews’ job and that of his training and consulting team is all about managing that change and getting the people who it will impact upon to buy into that new way of thinking. “The technology will work,” he says. “But you can design the best system in the world, technically flawless, but unless the people are on board the project isn’t successful.”
