Dealing with the full range of medical emergencies from urgent baby deliveries to the aftermath of violent assaults, the production team used a range of file-based cameras including Canon XF305 and Sony PMW-EX3 with Convergent’s Nanoflash. Additional footage was shot using body cams, Angela’s diary cam and miniature Go Pros to get reaction shots of the crew. Since production on the series began last November over 5TB of content has been captured, a
volume of data which required an efficient file-based workflow. Production manager Rory Robertson comments: “Our on- location researcher was equipped with a laptop and two LaCie Rugged hard drives for downloading material. These acted as a working drive and mirror drive. Both were sent back to Outline’s HQ where the content was imported into a shared storage system which mirrored all the footage and made it available across our five in-house Media Composers.” Head of production Diana Hunter adds: “With our own Media Composers we are able to maximise the time our staff are able to work on productions. Another big advantage of in-house post is that last minute changes were easy to make. Edits were planned around a

series of storylines, but the final cuts always hinged on whether or not the production team could obtain consent from the patients. “Obviously they were not aware prior to us turning up that they may feature on TV so we expected to lose a good 10-15 per cent of stories because we couldn’t get the subject’s permission.” This meant that the show’s editors had to keep all the footage to hand in case last minute re-editing was required. Good to know then that Media Composer was able to handle any changes quickly and reliably, no matter how comprehensive. Says facilities manager Sean Schmolz: “MC allows us to perform fast offline edits, so when it comes to the conform and online using Symphony Nitris DX, the turnaround is quick.”
