Last month we looked at how important it is for the growth of your company to invest in new, greener technology. Now let’s look at ways you can


get buy-in from your cleaning staff to implement that new technology. Cleaners are often the last and largest stumbling block to going high-tech with your operation.


I see this scenario repeated among my clients worldwide: A company owner gets excited about new, more efficient cleaning equipment and purchases it for his staff. When it arrives at his facility, nobody knows how or why to use it, so it

gets parked in a storage closet. Six months later, the owner hears about an even better piece of equipment — and the process starts all over again.


The company owner isn’t buying the wrong equipment. He’s just not bothering to get buy-in from the people using it. Whoever is making the purchase decision thinks – and reasonably so – that greener, more efficient equipment will be welcomed and immediately adopted by the cleaning staff. That reasoning neglects to take one important factor into consideration: any new equipment is going to interrupt long-established routines.

one’s routine doesn’t come easily – but that doesn’t mean introducing new technology has to be difficult. Make sure your transition plan involves those who will be most impacted by the change: include a few trusted, long-time cleaners and the supervisor who has to introduce the technology to the rest of the team.


• First, assure your supervisor that the manufacturer’s representative will be involved in training. That eliminates a lot of stress, not to mention a huge time commitment from your very busy supervisor.


• Second, expect some initial resistance. Your supervisor will mention the person w ho has worked there the longest, proclaiming that he or she will be the hardest to convince. On the
